Naturopathy has been around for over 4000 years and was the first form of medicine. Hippocrates, (the father of medicine and what modern medicine is based on), created the foundation work of Naturopathy. He is well known for his quotes including “all disease begins in the gut” and “let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”.
Today, Naturopathy is a blend of scientific and traditional medicine and this combination allows for a complete wholistic approach to health. A Naturopath is trained to look at the body as a whole and identify where the origins of the disease stems from. It is their training in anatomy, physiology, chemistry, biochemistry, clinical medicine, and clinical case taking that allows them to be able to do this. Once this is identified, they use their training in traditional medicine, herbal medicine, nutritional medicine, supplemental medicine, lifestyle and environmental changes to assist with getting the body well again and staying well.
There is strong evidence to support Naturopathic Medicine and it is a safe option with the intention to do no further harm to the body, including side effects (which can be a problem with a lot of prescription medications available today).
Whenever you take health advice from someone, you must make sure that they are qualified to do so. Unfortunately, there is a lot of health advise circulating that comes for well meaning people who have not studied in this field and do not have a qualification in the profession.
